Market Makers wins a Sunday Times Top 100 Best Company Award
2009
Staff at Market Makers decided that one of their values would be
the image of a fist - symbolising the power of the group working
together. And the company, one of the youngest in our list, has
certainly punched above its weight by shooting into the rankings in
25th position.
Most of the 65 employees at this direct marketing firm are in
their mid-twenties, and directors Paul Thomas and Henry Braithwaite
- who started the company - are both just 27.
Market Makers won an HSBC Start-up Stars award in 2007, and has
grown from a staff of 10 in 2004 to working with clients including
Microsoft, Barclays Bank and HSBC. It finds new opportunities for
its clients through the internet, print and telemarketing and
recruited 27 new employees last year. Staff say that colleagues are
fun (93%), their groups have a buzz about them (84%), that people
care for one another (91%) and feel a strong sense of family too
(86%).
Employees are excited about where the firm is going (88%) and
inspired by the leadership (89%). To keep people motivated, once a
month everyone gets together for an afternoon of awards and then a
social gathering such as a trip to London or 'a party at Henry or
Paul's house'. Outings have included destinations such as a
Portsmouth football match and the Isle of Wight.
The company has a dedicated learning and development department
and employees say there are no limits to their growth at the firm
(83%).
Managers have all been recruited from within and people say they
appreciate a job well done (86%) and motivate them to give their
best every day (79%).
People don't report work related stress (85%) and their health
isn't suffering because of work (87%), while Market Makers offers
twice - weekly therapy sessions to help people quit smoking, run by
the NHS.
