Team spirit pays off for Market Makers

It all began with a few phone calls from a bedroom six years ago. Now the hard work has been recognised nationally.

Market Makers has been voted the fourth best small company to work for in the South East by The Sunday Times. And it was also voted the 25the best in the country - after just six years in business.

The marketing/telemarketing company, based in Portsmouth, started when managing director Paul Thomas decided to set up a business of his own six years ago. Sat in his bedroom with a telephone and a copy of the Yellow Pages, he began to build up contacts and produce his own marketing business. Mr Thomas is now in partnership with Henry Braithwaite - a colleague with whom he worked with in his previous job.

Speaking about being voted one of the best small companies to work for in the country, Mr Thomas said: "It's awesome, absolutely brilliant. The team are delighted and everyone thinks it's great. We are trying to build something that is totally different to any other company. Each member of the team treats everyone as equals and it's an all for one and one for all mentality - there's a lot of that missing in businesses". He added: "We are working with the whole team to build a unique marketing agency. It's good fun. Everyone treats everyone with respect, and everyone feels like they are helping the business move forward and grow. We like to think our team look forward to going into work as they know they have a really good team here to support them".

The team are involved in a lot of activities in order to build up good working relationships and improve team spirit. They have been treated to surf trips, rugby matches, roller-discos and even trips abroad to Prague and Barcelona.

Award winners

In addition to being voted a top company by The Sunday Times, Market Makers also won the Business of the Year accolade at The News Business Excellence Awards. The company was also recognised by Investors in People and also named the winner in the HSBC Start-Up Awards.
