Fledgling firm takes
50th slot
Marketing enterprise has secured pole
position
An ambitious new marketing firm has
moved into Technopole as the centre's
50th tenant. Market Makers is hoping to
secure new business in the wake of its
move into the flagship £4m complex.
The firm, started by two businessmen who
met at school in Portsmouth - is
just three weeks old. Managing director
Paul Thomas said: "we moved into
Technopole because it was very flexible
- we can expand or contract easily
if we want to. And the facilities we need
like broadband are already here -
we don't need to worry about them."
Market Makers offer marketing expertise
to small and medium sized forms, through
mail shots or telemarketing. Mr. Thomas
said the firm was unusual because it charged
on results - such as through the
number of sales secured. The 22-year old
who used to work for Waterlooville firm
Thomas Sanderson, set up Market Makers
with Henry Braithwaite, who is also 22.
The pair became friends at Horndean Secondary
School and South Downs College.
Portsmouth Technopole in Kingston Crescent
opened in April 2002 and has offices ranging
in size from 200 sq ft to 2,000 sq ft.
It is owned by Oxford Innovation and has
been supported by Portsmouth City Council,
the University of Portsmouth, and the
South East England Development Agency
(SEEDA). The authorities were keen to
see the centre built because they want
it to spawn dozens of hi-tech start up
firms that will expand and move out of
the Technopole into the local area -
creating good quality jobs.
Technopole manager Frankie Owens, 29,
said: "The number of companies that
have signed up shows confidence in the
Technopole and the economic climate in
Portsmouth".
Centres help traders flourish
Experts say that firms that begin their
lives in science parks or business centres
are three times more likely to succeed
than those that don't. They say
the experience of working alongside like-minded
outfits increases discipline and allows
ideas to be shared. Julian Ingleby, development
manager for Aston Science Park in Birmingham,
said: "There is a lot of mutual
support in centres, with companies helping
each other to solve problems. It is a
well tested idea that began in the early
1980s and proved successful."
"We moved into the Technopole
because it was very flexible"
